Floriculture focuses on the discovery and utilization of the plant's ornamental value. Floricultural studies research the production of floricultural crops, as well as the classification, propagation, genetics, breeding, utilization, and distribution of the crops. With the recent development of the garden industry and the increasing interest in urban agriculture, it is also closely related to human life based on the industrial aspect.

Floriculture & Landscape Plants Laboratory at Seoul National University began in 1968 with the establishment of the Department of Horticulture in 1967. Dr. Talyoung Yu, who arrived at the university in 1946, served as the first advisor, followed by Dr. Doyi Yeam (1974), Dr. Ki Sun Kim (1988), and Dr. Hyo Beom Lee (2022). Starting with research on seed germination of zoysia grass and breeding and cultivation of Korean Hibiscus in the 1960s, we researched the utilization of ornamental plants, manipulation of flowering in horticultural crops, seed dormancy of endangered native plants, and techniques for supplemental lighting and nutrient cultivation in greenhouses.

We are currently conducting research on the crassulacean acid metabolism of Orchidaceae plants, manipulation of flowering and year-round production of Korean native plants, and development of crop growth and flowering models in floricultural crops.
