INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GAMOS ALLIANCE
&
WMO/CAgM WAMIS II expert group meeting
Workshop on WIS/GCI Collaboration
Weather/Climate Community Meeting

(Bareve Hotel, Seogwipo city, Jeju Province, Republic of Korea, 24 Nov.- 2 Dec. 2014)

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Korea Meteorological Administration, Group on Earth Observations (GEO), Seoul National University (SNU), and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) are organizing this International Conference on Weather/Climate Modeling and Remote Sensing Applications for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea from 25 to 28 November 2014.

1. GOALS

The conference will focus on brining experts together from the weather and climate modeling, remote sensing, agrometeorological, agricultural, and information communication technology communities to explore how to use these technologies for agricultural applications. It will also explore establishing a possible GAMOS alliance to develop a framework for this collaboration among existing legacy systems that are relevant to the sustainable agriculture and food security community based on in-situ monitoring, remote sensing, weather and climate predictions.

This Alliance could support the following key components: early warning systems, land use monitoring systems, weather hazard assessment system, and phenological observation networks which could incorporate state-of-art technologies such as seasonal to sub-seasonal forecasts (S2S), online GIS applications, and cloud computing environments for sharing ICT resources.

This international conference is devoted not only to identifying and reviewing existing activities and establishing a global partnership to coordinate the activities among the concerned institutions, but also to consider promising joint regional/global research in order to provide guidance for future GAMOS activities. These joint efforts will contribute to the GFCS implementation for Agriculture and Food Security.

The following WAMIS II expert group meeting will focus on future implementation of WAMIS-DCPC which is expected to provide ICT resource platform for developing countries with GIS-Online, WIS/GCI (GEO Common Infrastructure) metadata archives under Cloud computing environment.

2. EXPECTED OUTCOMES
? Review existing applications for agriculture based on weather/climate forecasts and remote-sensing information;
? Make recommendations on future promising applications for agriculture based on weather/climate forecasts and remote-sensing information;
? Explore synergies between GAMOS and other GIAM initiatives such as WAMIS Next Phase, GFAMS, GCREAM, and GAMPP;
? Improved cross-cutting linkages among global entities for better weather and climate services to global user communities in the sector of Agriculture and Food Security through coordinated mechanism of GAMOS Alliance;
? Establishment of Steering Committee for future implementation of GAMOS Alliance activities;
? Identification of potential overarching research agenda to tackle pending issues in each theme under GAMOS Alliance umbrella;
? Strategy development to employ promising state-of-art technologies and ICT infrastructures for GAMOS at regional/global scale.
