Title: Implementing 557th Weather Wing’s Land Characterization Mission for the 21st Century

Abstract

As a trusted partner since 2005, Air Force Weather (AFW) has relied on the Hydrological Sciences Laboratory at National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC) to lead the interagency scientific collaboration known as the Land Information System (LIS). LIS is an advanced software framework for high performance land surface modeling and data assimilation of geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) information upon which AFW relies on for the production of accurate and timely characterization of global land state information. The 557th Weather Wing’s (557 WW) collaboration with NASA/GSFC has led to the development and transition-to-operations of a significant number of new capabilities supporting airmen, soldiers, and combat forces with consistent, reliable, and accurate information regarding the state of the natural environment at all echelons of military operations.

Current partner agencies include NASA GSFC, U.S. Air Force 557 WW, U.S. Army Engineer Research & Development Center (ERDC), U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab (CRREL), NOAA National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL), National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and the academic community (domestic and international). The Goal of the 557 WW’s land characterization program is to maintain and upgrade AFW’s premier global land information system (LIS) and preserve the 16th Weather Squadron’s preeminence as a global resource and center of excellence for global land state information. An overview of LIS capabilities and NASA/GSFC’s role in achieving the 557 WW’s vision, mission, and priorities will be presented.
