Typing: Rapid Detection of Foodborne Pathogens

Molecular typing is defined as distinguishing genetically related isolates that are indistinguishable from each other by a variety of molecular typing methods, or grouping isolates that are so similar that they are presumed to be derived from a common ancestor. Typing is important for ascertaining two or more strains which are derived from a single parent organism, comparing strains found in different places, and providing essential data for efficient clinical diagnosis or epidemiological investigations.

General criteria for evaluating typing system

- Reproducibility
- Typeability
- Discriminatory power
- Ease of interpretation
- Ease of performance
- Time-saving system
